Work environment at MI5

MI5 prides itself on its strong teamwork. We believe that you can seldom work alone and achieve the best outcome. This means that for us to perform to our absolute best our working environment has evolved to become friendly, supportive, and respectful. The range of backgrounds and skills of our workforce is huge and varied, however we are all connected by our motivation to do what is right and protect the UK’s national security. As a result, our teams form strong, trusting, and long-lasting relationships.

The work at MI5 can be pressurised at times, but colleagues with more experience mentor and coach those who are new to the organisation, guiding them through any difficult challenges they face by offering advice and training. When there are new or emerging threats and challenges on the horizon, we find that our best solutions come from working collaboratively, not only from within our organisation, but also with other intelligence agencies, the police, and other government departments.

The more we work together, and listen to the views of others, the more ideas, and effective solutions we have. Teamwork is key to our business.

New Entrant Orientation (NEO)

We know that starting a new job can be daunting, which is why we have developed the New Entrant Orientation programme. This modular pathway runs for the first 100 days of you joining our community, so you can get a feel for our organisation and where your role fits in. With buddies to help you settle in, networking events and socials, our structured programme of learning will give you all the information you need at the right time, tailored to you.

We want everyone who joins our organisation to feel that they belong, and that no matter what role they are doing, they are making a positive impact on the UK’s security.
